ISO/IEC 17025:2017 (NABL) Certification for Metallic coatings & treatment solutions
Metallic Coatings and Treatment Solutions
The metallic coating is the solution that is used in metal industry to protect the structural metal from an environment that is corrosive in nature. In this, there is a thin layer of a different metal is applied on the base metal which protects the base metal from oxidation. The metal coating separates the metal from the ambient atmosphere and hence prevents the corrosion from happening. The metal coatings can be classified into two different groups that are the ones that are more active than the metal to be protected and the ones that are more noble than the metal to be protected.
When it comes to protection of steel from corrosion, the coatings that are more active than steel include zinc, aluminium, and cadmium. The coatings act as anodes provide cathodic protection to steel. The metal that are lesser active than steel include chromium, copper and nickel. With this type of coating if there are holes or discontinuation in the coating, then there is more aggressive corrosion on those sites. These coatings are used mainly for increasing the lustre, hardness and electrical conductivity.
There are several processes through which metallic coating is done.
Galvanization
Galvanization is one of the most commonly used method for corrosion protection which is application of metallic zinc on the surface of steel to prevent the corrosion of steel. When there is zinc coating on the surface, it breaks the electrical circuit that is required for the corrosion process hence corrosion is stop. Hot-dip galvanization is most commonly used mode of galvanization in which the steel structure is dipped into a bath of liquid zinc.
Electroplating
Electroplating is another method that is used for metallic coating. Electroplating process includes taking a solution called electrolyte and then passing electrical current through it. There are two electrodes that are dipped in the electrolyte to pass current through it. The elements and chemicals for electrodes and electrolyte are chosen very carefully to commence the electroplating successfully. When the electrical current passes through the electrolyte, the ions of the electrolyte split up and the metal atoms contained in the electrolyte are deposited on the surface of one of the electrode in the form of a thin layer. The electroplating method is used for a variety of metals such as gold, zinc, cadmium, copper and so forth.
Metal surface treatment is another way to protect the metal surfaces from corrosion. For this the surface of the metal is treated for painting and then the paint is applied on the metal surface to protect it from corrosion.
As the metal coating and treatment solutions are meant to protect the base metals from corrosion, it is important to ensure that the metal coating performed on a substrate has good quality or it can hamper the performance and life of the metal surface to a great extent. This is why the testing of metallic coatings must be done in a lab that is NABL accredited and ISO 17025: 2017 certified. This ensures the accuracy of testing data.
