Hazardous & Restricted Chemicals
There are plenty
of hazardous chemicals that are used in manufacturing a variety of products all
over the world. If these hazardous chemicals are not handled properly and
carefully, they might cause great danger to the users and the workers involved
in the manufacturing of such products. Many serious health problems including
skin irritation, choking and even cancer can be caused due to the use of such
hazardous and restricted chemicals. As a result of which the regulating
authorities in many countries have restricted the use of such chemicals in
manufacturing of the products. In addition to that, the countries have also
restricted the import of products and goods that contain the hazardous
chemicals. Mainly electrical and electronic goods are the ones that use the
hazardous chemicals. In addition to electrical goods, there are some plastic
goods such as toys also may contain these chemicals which pose a big threat for
the health of the users.
The hazardous
chemicals that are restricted include lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd),
hexavalent chromium (CrVI), polybrominated biphenyls (PBB), polybrominated
diphenyl ethers (PBDE), and four different phthalates (DEHP, BBP, BBP, DIBP).
When a product is imported in a country, it is tested for restricted substances
with the help of ROHS analysers and XRF analysers.
Due to these
restrictions, the manufacturers of the electrical and electronic goods need to
be tested thoroughly for the presence of such chemicals. In addition to that,
handling and storage of such chemicals is also a great risk hence it must be
done safely also. If the manufacturers fail to test the hazardous chemicals
properly and the chemicals are found in the products during testing, then the
manufacturers can not only be fined heftily, they can also be banned from
exporting the goods to the countries where the restrictions are imposed. This
is why, the manufacturers need to test the products rigorously and also it
should be kept in mind that the laboratory that is conducting the testing of
the products must follow all the procedures and guidelines that are necessary
for efficient and accurate testing.
There are
guidelines that are prescribed by NABL that must be followed by the labs to
conduct accurate testing. In addition to that, the international standard
organization ISO also has released a standard that is meant for laboratories
only. When the testing for restricted and hazardous chemical, then the
laboratory in which the testing is being done, must have ISO 17025: 2017
certification. This will ensure that the lab is following all the good
laboratory practices and hence there are no chances for any errors.
Additionally, the NABL accreditation should also be possessed by the lab as
only the test reports from lab with NABL accreditation are accepted
internationally.
