ISO/IEC 17025:2017 (NABL) Certification for Corrosion tests
Corrosion Testing
Corrosion is the [process of oxidation of the surfaces of any metallic objects due to presence of moisture and oxygen. When a metal comes in contact with oxygen, it starts a chemical reaction to produce oxide of that metal. This oxide is deposited on the surface of the metal. Apart from oxygen and moisture, there are some other factors also that contribute to the corrosion of the metal surfaces such as temperature, electrical conductivity and presence of Acids and alkali.
Ill-effects of Corrosion
When the corrosion occurs on the surface of metals, this leads to deposition of oxide on the surface of the metal. Due to this deposition of oxide on the surface ruins the appearance of the metal and makes it appear of low grade. In addition to that, due to corrosion, there is reduction of metal component which is converted into oxide hence it also degrades the quality as well as the strength of the metal products. As most of the metals are used for purposes of strength gain, corrosion can proved to be fatal for the quality of the products. Corrosion can cost a lot when it comes to repair and replacement of corroded parts. Corrosion of products not only impacts financially but also it poses a great danger and threat for safety. Also when the corroded particles are suspended in to the air, it causes extensive corrosion. In order to ensure the best strength, life and quality of the products, the manufacturers need to test the corrosion rate of the metals and the corrosive behavior of the metals in different environments.
Corrosion testing
Corrosion testing is one of the most reliable ways of finding the corrosion rate of the materials and hence predicts their life cycle and their behavior in a certain environment. This is done by recreating the process of corrosion in a controlled environment. With the help of the test results, the use of the metals in appropriate
environments is decided. Salt spray test is one such testing procedure that is used for testing the corrosion rate of the materials. The test is conducted in a closed chamber in presence of an electrolyte such as salt. Salt spray test accurately predicts the actual rate of corrosion for the metals. In this way, right selection of the metals becomes easy.
As corrosion testing has such a great impact on the quality of the products, the manufacturers need to ensure that the products are thoroughly tested under standard condition so that the best testing are obtained. The laboratory that conducts the corrosion testing for a specimen must be properly accredited by NABL and must be certified for
ISO 17025: 2017. The ISO 17025: 2017 is the standard that is set by the authorities to ensure proper testing conducted in a laboratory.
