ISO/IEC 17025:2017 (NABL) Certification for Microbiology and Serology

Microbiology and Serology
Microorganisms are all around us, from the great outdoors to our internal organs. Most people assume that these germs are all dangerous but biologists know better. Studying these microbes has revealed how these organisms function as the invisible backbone of life. Microorganisms are important in our life as they are in us, around us, and on us and they are not always bad.

What is Microbiology?
Microbiology is the study of all living organisms that are too small to be visible with the naked eye like bacteria, archaea, viruses, fungi, prions, protozoa, and algae, commonly known as microbes. These microbes help in nutrient cycling, climate change, food spoilage, biodegradation, and are also the cause and control of the disease. Microbes are used in many ways such as making life-saving drugs, cleaning up pollution, manufacture of biofuels and producing or processing food and drink. A person who studies microbes is known as Microbiologists, and some of the most important discoveries that have underpinned modern society have resulted from the research of famous microbiologists, such as Jenner and his vaccine against smallpox, Fleming and the discovery of penicillin, Marshall and the identification of the link between Helicobacter pylori infection and stomach ulcers and Zur Hausen, who identified the link between papillomavirus and cervical cancer. Microbiologists continue their research which also helps meeting some of the global challenges like energy security for a healthy population on habitable earth or procuring food and water for everyone.

Serology
Serology or antibody tests are blood-based tests that can be used to identify whether people have been exposed to a particular pathogen by looking at their immune response. During Covid-19, Serology testing for SARS-CoV-2 saw a surge in demand to identify which person has been attacked by the virus.

A blood sample collected in a vial is sent to a lab where a test is run to look for the presence of antibodies in the blood serum. The presence of antibodies means that the body had an immune response to fight off a virus.

The common test that is used for serologic testing is called the ELISA test, for enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. A range of techniques used are chemiluminescence, agglutination, direct and indirect immunofluorescence, and Western blotting. Serological tests can be used to detect viral and bacterial antigens and antibodies IgG and IgM, to help diagnose diseases and check immune status. Some serological tests can be performed on other bodily fluids such as cerebrospinal fluid CSF and urine as they are not limited to serum.

Antibody tests for COVID-19 return many false-positive results. This means that even if the test
returns a positive result, implying that someone has COVID-19 antibodies and already recovered from the coronavirus disease, that might not be the case.

The test is recommended for patients who are scheduled for a procedure or surgery, in the setting of a potential plasma donation with prior diagnosed or suspected COVID-19, markers of Hepatitis B infection or past infection, Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) status, Hepatitis C virus, Rubella immune status.
.
The labs which conduct serological tests must have their quality accreditation from NABL and must have certification for ISO 17025: 2017. In this way, it can be assured that the testing is done accurately and safely.
